Heavy duty diesel engine is a big oil consumer in China. How to achieve ultra-low emission and low fuel consumption while ensuring the high reliability of heavy-duty diesel engines? The key technology development and industrialization project of the new generation of ultra-low emission heavy-duty commercial diesel engines, which won the second prize of the 2017 National Science and Technology Progress Award, gives the answer. The project overcame technical difficulties such as combustion technology and exhaust gas post-treatment technology, invented a new environmentally friendly catalyst and preparation method, proposed a coupling control strategy for combustion system and post-treatment system, and formed a new generation of ultra-low emission heavy-duty diesel engine technology system, which enabled my country's heavy-duty diesel engines to achieve a leap from National III to Euro VI standards, and the overall technical results reached the international advanced level.

The project is jointly developed by Tianjin University, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd. and China Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. According to the project leader and Professor Yao of Tianjin University, heavy-duty diesel engines are widely used in trucks, large buses and construction machinery, and play an important role in the national economy and social life. However, heavy-duty diesel engine is a major oil consumer in China. According to statistics, heavy commercial vehicles, which account for only 13.9 per cent of the total number of cars, consume 49.2 per cent of the total amount of oil used by cars. How to achieve ultra-low emissions and low fuel consumption while ensuring high reliability of heavy-duty diesel engines has become a difficult problem for the project team.

In order to solve this problem, the project team, with the support of national "973", "863" and provincial and ministerial projects, carried out research on the key technologies of ultra-low emission heavy-duty diesel engines, proposed ultra-low emission technical routes, invented new air systems and new combustion methods, and developed combustion technologies that meet emission regulations at different stages. Invented new catalyst formulations, preparation methods and methods and devices to achieve ultra-low emissions; invented a new structure and process for heavy-duty diesel engines to achieve improved structural strength and lightweight.

The technology invented the environment-friendly catalyst and preparation method, proposed the coupling control strategy of combustion system and post-treatment system, so that the comprehensive conversion efficiency of nox reached 92%, to meet the requirements of Euro VI regulations.
